Satellite Internet Puts Travel Information at Your Fingertips

July 6th, 2010

After a while working that nine to five job, a vacation is most often a necessity. People can only stand to work in an office or in a certain place for so long before they start to go stir crazy. After that point, they start to get burnt out, stop caring and eventually begin to perform poorly. If the attitude keeps up, they could eventually see themselves losing that crucial job that pays the monthly bills.

And when it comes to planning and organizing a vacation, it is essential to have a cable, DSL or satellite Internet connection. Dial-up just will not do. With all the research and online booking, a high-speed connection is a necessity to ensure that travel plans become a reality. Luckily, for all of those people who live outside of cities, satellite broadband provides that needed, fast link up to plan out the perfect itinerary.

Normally, that ideal trip is already planned out ahead of time in your head; that special place that you have wanted to visit for as long as you can remember. You more than likely have already cruised a few travel sites, like Trazzler.com or VirtualTourist.com, and are now starting to make bookings. But since work schedules are so sporadic these days, it can take some time to actual go through with plans and cement those reservations. With a Wi-Fi or satellite Internet connection on a laptop, however, those travel plans can now go mobile. So, you can cruise around and shop for plane tickets, and then later on in the day at another location you can actually submit payment information and book that specific hotel room.

One of the best parts about traveling is keeping an open agenda. Granted, as people age they want everything to be planned. They want to know before they even set foot on the departing flight that all the tours, lodging and transportation is booked; it is simply what makes them comfortable. At the same time, however, traveling with a flexible schedule is one of the most important things a person can do. If, for example, you are planning on traveling for a couple weeks in Europe or South America, you want to make sure that if you decide to stay in a specific place for a little while longer that it will not affect every other aspect of the trip. This is why bringing a personal computer on a journey and having a reliable connection is key. And because satellite Internet provides a linkup from anywhere in the world, it is one of the most relied upon services for world and domestic travelers. Even if isolated on a far away beach, where electricity does not even exist, satellite broadband can provide a usable connection and can help make future plans.

As a travel recommendation, one of the best things that a person can do is subscribe to the “Lonely Planet” online forum. There, actual travelers with real experience can answer any number of questions about itineraries, ideal places to stay or specific restaurants. Not to mention that with great, useful information littered all over the site, Lonelyplanet.com is as crucial for any traveler as the actual, physical guidebook.

So, no matter how you make your travel plans or what sites you use, the main thing to understand is that if the travel bug is eating away at you, you must satisfy it. The longer it is suppressed, the worse it will become.

How Travel Insurance Works

July 5th, 2010
0

Travel insurance can be quite flexible, covering you for every eventuality imaginable, or just for the barest minimum. One thing for sure though, if you travel you must have it.

One decision to make before anything else is whether to buy a single trip policy or an annual policy which covers you for multiple trips a year. The latter could pay for itself if you hop over to Europe just three times in the year. It’s easy. Once a year you arrange cover and then you don’t have to think about it every time you go away.

If you are lucky enough to be able to decide on a weekend in Paris on the spur of the moment, and maybe another in Madrid six weeks later, you should definitely go for an annual policy.

Then the next question: are you just going to Europe, or further afield, like to the States or the other side of the world? The price for Europe only will be a lot cheaper.

Whichever you choose, check the policy details carefully so you know what exactly you are covered for, and what is excluded. And whether they replace lost belongings on a ‘new for old’ basis.

You are usually covered for loss or theft of luggage and personal possessions. But check the limit and make sure you are covered for 1,500 pounds at least. You may be surprised at the cost of replacing everything in your suitcase, not to mention the case itself.

Travel insurance usually limits cover for the amount of cash stolen so check the policy. And not that travellers’ cheques are often regarded as cash under their terms.

On top of that, consider covering specific items like photographic equipment or jewellry for example. You can put a value of between 200 and 500 pounds on those sorts of things.

One thing that is easy to break or to lose altogether on holiday is your specs, or your brand new sunglasses. Make certain the full cost, bar the policy excess, is claimable if necessary.

But above all else, travel insurance gives you peace of mind in the event of a medical problem or emergency. Be upfront with the insurer if you have any existing medical conditions which might preclude you from taking out the policy. There are insurers around which will cover certain medical problems.

As regards healthcare in Europe, if you have the new European Health Insurance Card, which took the place of the E 111, you might have your excess waived if you need treatment whilst over there.

It’s really annoying if you have to cancel or cut short a holiday due to illness, or the death of a close family member. The right travel insurance policy will help soften the blow by paying compensation if that happens.

Last but not least, most travel agents will offer you travel insurance when you are signing up for one of their deals. It will very likely cost a lot more than some of the deals you can find on the internet, so decline politely and shop around.

10 Travel Tips to Get Through Airport Security Faster

July 3rd, 2010

0

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Flying is no longer a luxury. It has become a huge hassle, especially when it comes to the security lines. Below are 10 travel tips, based on experience, which will help you get through airport security faster.

1. Carry a bag on wheels. The stores sell great carry-on bags with wheels and pop-up handles. You can store all of your personal items and electronics in one place so your hands will be free. If you are organized, you will travel more comfortably and more quickly.

2. Print your boarding pass in advance. If you do not have any luggage to check, you can generally proceed straight to security with your boarding pass.

3. Check your Toiletries. It is best to pack your toiletries in your checked baggage. If you have to take them in your carry-on, make sure they comply with aviation standards regarding size and packaging before you get to the airport.

4. Toss your drinks. You cannot bring any drinks through security, so check your bags for water bottles, drinks, or other liquids and throw them away before you get to security. If you want to buy a drink at the airport, wait until you have passed security to get it.

5. Carry your ID and boarding pass. After check-in, have these items in-hand to show to the officers at security so you do not have to waste time digging through your bag.

6. Remove your laptop. You have to pass your laptop through the x-ray machine without the case, in a separate bin from the rest of your things, so have your laptop (and other electronics) easily accessible. Take your laptop out of the case while you are waiting in line so you can put it right into the bin.

7. Wear Slip-on shoes. Airports require that you take off your shoes when you go through security, so wearing sandals or ballet style shoes will make the process faster. Take off your shoes while you are waiting in line and toss them in the bin.

8. Pack your belt. Unless your pants are going to fall down, pack your belt in your luggage so you do not have to take it on and off for the metal detector.

9. Empty you pockets. Put all of your personal items in your carry-on bag before you get to the airport. That includes cell phone, keys, and coins. Then, check your pockets again while you are in line for security and empty the contents into a bin.

10. Remove your Jacket. You probably will not be allowed to pass through the metal detector with a jacket or sweater, so place it on the conveyor belt with the rest of your things.

Travel Grants Can Be the Secret to Free Travel

June 30th, 2010
0

Are you a new travel writer looking for travel writing jobs? Would you like free travel? There is a way that few writers know about to help them get the funds they need – funds that could take you to a destination that you’ve always wanted to write about. The same way that many high-school graduates get funding for college, and many start up business get funding to help them open the doors and put up the shingle – it’s grants! Yep, good old-fashioned grants.

Grants exist to fund all types of projects, so there’s no reason why you couldn’t apply for a travel grant. If you’re passionate about the environment and the effects that travel has on it, apply for a grant to go research and write about it. You could head an expedition to the Amazon Rain forest or some of our national parks. You could write about how tourists have taken a toll on these areas. Some possible topics could be “How can we sustain these areas?” “Is it time to stop tourism to the Amazon Rain forest?” You could help to preserve such beautiful areas for generations to come.

First you should decide exactly what it is that you want to accomplish – a series of articles, a book, etc. – and the topic. Next, make sure that you read through the grant guidelines before you write your proposal. Think of it as sending a letter of inquiry to an editor at a publication. You need to make sure it’s perfect, otherwise it could be rejected.

If you’re considering applying for a travel grant, make sure you write a compelling grant proposal. You wouldn’t send an editor a mediocre inquiry – don’t write a mediocre grant proposal. It’s imperative that you make your case in a way that is clear, concise, and intriguing, in order to get your grant approved. You might also consider the services of a grant-writing person or firm – these are people who are extremely knowledgeable about the process and how to get an approval.

There are a huge number of resources online to help with tips and advice, examples of well-written proposals, and people and companies that specialize in writing grant proposals for others — do a bit of surfing to help you get started.

Don’t be discouraged if you apply for one (or more) travel grants and get rejected — there are many sources of grant funding, so just rewrite your proposal and try again. All it takes is one grant approval to speed you on your way to an intriguing new destination and writing career. Many travel writers come back from a trip with enough material (notes, journal entries, photos and videos) and inspiration to write a large quantity of articles for weeks — or even months — to come.

So what are you waiting for? Go apply for a travel grant and get out there!
